The story takes place in the near future, on the remote peninsula of San de Yermo, somewhere between Mexico and California. Its exact location is difficult to determine, as rising sea levels and the First Magnetic Wars have altered national borders and reshaped the coastline.
The landscape blends the arid regions of California with pine forests and rugged mountain ranges. San de Yermo is separated from the mainland by the deep Wilson Canyon, which was further widened and deepened by a massive earthquake.
